For years dance & movement have been a topic of research as the subject, in particular within the discipline of anthropology and cultural studies, but also in dance and movement education, therapy, and performance studies.
An ethnography on salsa dancing and cultural meaning by Bosse (2008) focused on the emergence of Latin dance within white American dance teams. She found that "movement dialect" plays a key role in salsa dancing and that "dance involves a set of movements with shared, culturally agreed upon meanings" (Bosse, 2008, p. 48).
